This text
was conceived during the years of our existence (1994-1998). Our
committee was definively dissolved in May 1999 after publishing
our reasons for stopping all activities in the last
issue of our magazine ZAPATA, Mexico Newsletter.
The Solidarity
Committee Mexico has been founded a couple of weeks after the start
of the armed uprising of the EZLN
on january 1st 1994. Originally the Committee functioned as a platform
organization which was formed by a dozen of different organisations
and individuals. After a few months most of the participating organisations
lost interest and at the moment the Committee consists of various
individuals concerned with the struggle of the mexican people and
their grassroots organisations. We are not linked to any political
party what so ever. Our perspective is that of autonomous, grassroot
struggle and support of those organisations which have a non-hierarchical,
democratic structure. We confront the biased media coverage on the
uprising and the repressive policy of the mexican government. Besides
this we want to show our solidarity with the struggle of the mexican
legal and/or illegal grassroots organisations, which are struggling
for a democratic Mexico in which every citizen can participate on
an equal base in the wealth of the nation and the decision making
processes.
To this end we developed a couple of different activities. Our main
activity is the distribution of information, background and news,
on the recent developments in Mexico. For this purpuse we publish
a quarterly called ZAPATA, Mexico Newsbulletin.
Besides of publishing ZAPATA we organize from time to time public
briefings on Mexico, using video material combined with a explanation
by one of our members or by a representative of a mexican grassroots
representative on tour in Europe.
Our other activities
lay more in the field of direct protest. This takes the form of
a petition with signatures directed to the mexican government, manifestations
in front of the mexican ambassy in The Hague and the United States
consulate in Amsterdam, a manifestation on Dam square in Amsterdam
with the occupation of the balcony of the royal palace, where a
banner calling for support for the Zapatistas was unfolded.
Another activity
on the informational level is the editing of translations into Dutch
of communiques, interviews or articles from or about the Zapatistas
or any of the other Mexican grassroot organisations. We also have
a public archive of all sorts of material from and/or about Mexico.
The archive contains newspaper clippings, magazines, books, video,
taped interviews, a database containing loads of E-mail news, etc.
This archive has been donated in spring 2001 to the International
Institute for Social History where it will be accesible to everyone
as soon as the institute has catalogued our archive.
